Music lab

In the Music Lab, each teacher focuses on a different aspect. For a full weekly schedule of the group lessons, click here. Nathalie Bosch We focus on classical music, and listen to a wide variety of composers together: from Monteverdi to Mozart to Pärt. Film scores and musicals are also discussed. We learn to listen in a different way and to open up to music that we may not yet know. Together we look at the score and learn to understand the music better. Kim Delcour We explore the world of music in all its aspects. Not only classical music in all its time periods, but also folk, blues, jazz, pop, rock and world music. We build on the musical material of the 2nd degree and use the theoretical concepts to understand the music we play ourselves. Rudy Velghe This music lab focuses on folk and world music. It is a degree class, accessible to both young people and adults. Thomas Jillings We delve deeper into different types of music throughout jazz, pop and rock history. You learn how styles influence each other and blend into one another. You are introduced to “scenes” and “currents”. Here too a part of music theory is discussed, but less systematically than in the option “harmony / songwriting / improvisation”. We get to know harmony based on the typical features of the discussed styles. You learn to recognize musical shapes and structures, as well as typical rhythms, sounds and instruments for every style. Harmony and improvisation option: here we emphasize harmony and other aspects of music theory. You will learn the tools you need to improvise and / or write your own music. In this option we also get to know different styles, but then using examples that are chosen to highlight a certain aspect of harmony or songwriting. We also work on scales, chords and structures ourselves, with creative assignments and improvisation exercises. You learn how music really works and how you can create it yourself. You learn to recognize melodies and even chords by ear.
